Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Growth

Residents deserve to know exactly where their tax dollars are going and what they’re getting in return. Year after year, we are asked to pay more while seeing little improvement in the services and infrastructure we use every day. A responsible city budget isn’t just about cutting costs, it’s about making smart, transparent decisions that deliver visible, measurable value.

Taxation must be transparent. That means clear reporting, accessible information, and honest communication about how public money is spent. When residents are left guessing, trust breaks down. A strong local economy starts with fiscal discipline, strategic investment, and a commitment to supporting those who already contribute to the city, including local businesses.

Priorities:

• Adopt zero-based budgeting across departments. All spending must be justified annually, not carried forward without review.
• Focus on outcome-driven budgeting. Every dollar spent must produce clear public benefit or a measurable return to the tax base. If it doesn’t serve residents, it doesn’t belong in the budget.
• Make tax spending transparent. Publish easy-to-read, area-specific reports so residents can see how funds are allocated and where investments are being made.
• Ensure that major projects are supported by clear public demand and community benefit, not just city hall priorities.
• Track project overruns and require public reporting when costs exceed budget. Taxpayers deserve answers, not excuses, for the nearly $700 million in overruns over the past four years.
• Support economic growth by reducing barriers for local businesses and helping them expand. A stronger tax base starts by supporting those already investing in Edmonton while also making the city an inviting, competitive environment for future businesses to grow and succeed.
